I’m Emily (Emmy) and I’m a nutrition writer based in Brodick on the Isle of Arran in Scotland.
My background is in corporate communications and travel writing in Switzerland, which is where I first realised the power of food. The healthcare system there, which is an insurance-based model, encourages holistic treatment alongside more traditional Western medical approaches. It was in Switzerland that I discovered acupuncture, medical massage and nutrition.
For the first time in my life, I realised that what I put in my mouth had an impact on my energy levels, my hair, skin, and nails, my hormones, my sleep, my cognition - everything. I had appointments with nutritional therapists and read everything I could get my hands on regarding optimum nutrition, basically how to eat myself healthy. I became fascinated by what clinical trials were showing about how nutrition can affect chronic health conditions.
Most importantly of all, I really enjoyed eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet, packed with colour and flavour. It wasn’t anything radical, it didn’t feel restrictive. It felt amazing. I was enjoying food more than ever before. I think I was really tasting for the first time in my life. Let me tell you something: once you have felt the difference, you won''t look back.
I decided to take my learning further and just before I had my son, I completed the Science Access Course with the Institute for Optimum Nutrition for a scientific grounding in biology and chemistry. I later enrolled with Dale Pinnock’s Culinary Medicine College, going on the gain the Diploma in Culinary Medicine in 2020. Dale’s teachings are science-based, which is why I’m not interested in fads, diets, or single magic ingredients. Wholefoods are magical, and I truly believe that transitioning away from a processed diet to one of healthful wholefoods can help you feel your very best.
Now, I love working with clients to help them feel better, live their life more fully, and better show up for their family and friends. So often chronic complaints can go unheard as overworked doctors need to focus on the most critical issues. I hope I can give you the ear you need.
As the ancient Ayurvedic proverb says: “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” The question is: what is the correct diet for you?
“It breaks my heart to hear stories of people struggling with chronic health issues and not receiving the support or understanding they need. The world of nutrition is complicated, and can be very overwhelming, not to mention conflicting. I want to help clients find what’s relevant to them. I believe that with wholesome nutrition, the world can be a nicer place, because when we feel better, we act kinder.”
